Award Books for Kids
The Caldecott Award is an award given for excellence in illustrations. This award is given to one book per year, and up to four honor books may also be named.
The Newbery Award is given to the most distinguished Children’s book published the previous year. Like the Caldecott, one book is given the award per year with up to four honor books named.
Many of our local schools use the Young Hoosier Award nominees as the basis for their Battle of the Books competitions. Teachers like to use this list, too, because the students can vote for their favorite book on the list in the Spring.
Heritage Intermediate School chooses to create their own reading list (instead using the Young Hoosier list). These books have a sticker at the top that reads “HIS KNIGHTS READ”.
